All businesses have access to a remarkable amount of data, which can seem impossible to manage and even harder to organise!
The problem isn’t just the sheer volume of data, but the fact that it lives in countless one-off spreadsheets and disconnected hiding places throughout your business. It’s messy and often results in very little visibility and control. Business Intelligence dashboards help you to see the bigger picture and show you how to make your data work for you!
Neon gets your data out of those spreadsheets and into custom-built dashboards. Uniting your data into one platform, making your information simple to access and easy to understand.
Our solutions harbour a fantastic amount of data that can be leveraged for insight into each business network. The data in its raw form won’t give you many answers, but with the right logic applied it can open up another level of connection with participating individuals.
Fundamentally a good dashboard enables the viewer to determine what challenges they face and where they need to take action within a matter of seconds, which is why we spend considerable time understanding our audience and their objectives.
One of our existing clients had a substantial amount of under-utilised data which we knew would offer them invaluable insight into performance, behaviours, engagement and opportunities to improve if it was collated in a clear and manageable dashboard - so that’s exactly what we did!
Firstly, we focused on defining the key metrics of success for the programme. Working alongside our client we sought to understand what success looks like for them, how we can determine our current position and what kind of gap exists between where we are currently and where we want to be.
With a clear definition of success, we could determine the ‘key performance indicators’ that influence the desired outcome either positively or negatively. This led us to the next stage of…
With success defined, and KPIs established, it’s a matter of working backwards to determine who can influence performance in these key areas. These may be metrics that cover single or multiple job roles, or even broader than that, appealing to multiple departments. Getting the right insights to the right people is critical in ensuring the vision of success is achieved.
We established our core audience for the dashboards, shaping heavily towards the roles with the greatest impact in future success.
Without a clear picture of what’s happening, how do you know whether you’re on track or not? The next stage in the process was to formulate the first iteration of useful data that can provide insight into what’s happening right now. We ensured KPIs are updated with a frequency that aligns closely with the nature of their influence - those that move faster and have greater capacity to benefit or hinder business performance are updated more frequently, with more passive KPIs running on a slower rotation.
Real time data with clear performance versus what is targeted is evidently a critical measure, but there’s another significant question for us to ask in how we clearly communicate what requires action. So we ask...
It’s not always easy to answer this question, especially on a page with multiple measures all shouting for your attention in one go. Our objective was to ensure the user can discern within a number of seconds what’s happening, and which criterion to pay particular attention to. Does a metric performing well beyond expectations warrant the same screen real-estate as those lagging behind? And can we consider all those that lag behind equally worthy of the same attention at the same time?
During discovery we delved into this a little further, taking the time to understand the following:
1. Which KPIs offer the greatest benefit to the business if performing well, ranking them
2. Which KPIs may cause the greatest hindrance to business performance if performing poorly
3. Across each of these KPIs, what are the thresholds for performance that requires close monitoring, needs urgent attention, or can be left alone!
Putting all of the above together, our first iteration is in place - but we’re not finished yet! Whenever we go through this process we - and our clients - know that we have collectively focused on what we understand will provide the maximum benefit to the business. However, there’s always a period of validation which we must go through to ensure that what we have built offers the desired value, and is encouraging improved performance.
